Chicago Energy Benchmarking

Chicago Energy Benchmarking

The Chicago Building Energy Use Benchmarking Ordinance calls on existing municipal, commercial, and residential buildings larger than 50,000 square feet to track whole-building energy use, report to the City annually, and verify data accuracy every three years. The law, which was phased in from 2014-2017, covers less than 1% of Chicago’s buildings, which account for approximately 20% of total energy used by all buildings. For more details, including ordinance text, rules and regulations, and timing, please visit www.CityofChicago.org/EnergyBenchmarking

The ordinance authorizes the City to share property-specific information with the public, beginning with the second year in which a building is required to comply.

The dataset represents self-reported and publicly-available property information by calendar year. Currently, the data includes calendar year 2014 information for 243 properties, calendar year 2015 information for over 1,500 properties, calendar year 2016 information for over 2,700 properties, and calendar year 2017 information for almost 2,800 properties.

The "Data Year" column and filtered views under "More Views" can be used to isolate specific years.

This information is collected by the City of Chicago from the Chicago Department of Water and is not reported by building owners to the City of Chicago. In some cases, data are not available for some buildings.

Chicago Energy Ratingchicago_energy_ratingchicago_energy_ratingNumberThe zero-to-four-star Chicago Energy Rating assigned to the building in the shown Data Year. A building with zero stars did not submit a report, or did submit a report but was missing required information. All other buildings receive between one and four stars, with four stars reflecting the highest performance. Every building receives a Chicago Energy Rating Placard with this rating, which must be posted in a prominent location at the building. The rating must also be shared at the time of listing the building for sale or for lease. For more information, visit: www.ChicagoEnergyRating.org This column was added for the 2018 Data Year. It is blank for previous years.

Reporting Statusreporting_statusreporting_statusTextWhether the building submitted its report for the Data Year shown. Buildings that did not do so were not listed at all for Data Years through 2017 so all records prior to 2018 will have a value of Submitted. "Temporarily Exempt" means that the building received a one-year, temporary exemption from reporting. "Not Submitted" means that the building did not receive an exemption or submit a report, and is out of compliance. This status could also mean that a report was submitted, but was missing required information, such as whole-building energy use. "Submitted" means the building submitted a report and is in compliance for the Data Year shown.
