DisclaimersLimitationsThis dataset is an estimation of greenhouse gas emissions. First, the primary source of data is from Patterns and Trends. Patterns and Trends data does not include petroleum products used for non-energy purposes such as: propane used in the chemical industry, asphalt, road oil, lubricants, and petrochemical feedstocks. Second, methods for attributing emissions to biogenic energy recourses have not reached consensus. Most biofuels are treated as carbon neutral, despite growing awareness that these fuel categories should have emissions allocated to them. Third, greenhouse influencing emissions are converted to a "carbon equivalent" through the use of the EPA's Greenhouse Warming Potential rates. These are estimates that change over time as the science is refined.
